I’ve learned in the past few months how important it is to know how to do many different jobs at the place you work when there aren’t many employees.
I can write news stories, feature stories and advertorials. I can do ad sales and basic design. I can do social media and take print quality photos. I’ve used most of these skills at jobs where my primary role is as an editor.
When it comes to layout, I didn’t think it was anything I’d ever have to touch as an editor.
I can do layout and know photoshop, but it’s a slow process.
So when the creatives at one of my jobs couldn’t make it for layout night due to unforeseen emergencies, I panicked. Thanks to some helpful friends layout got done and sent to the printer on time.
But I realized how important it is to know how to do everything, especially when your role is editor and ultimately getting everything done is your responsibility.
